Abstract

Based on the 2002 birth data in the United States,1 maternal diabetes affects more than 321,760 of the 4,022,000 pregnancies that result in birth, and is a significant cause of maternal and fetal morbidity.2 Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) makes up approximately 50% of maternal diabetes.3 The remaining cases are due to type 1 diabetes and diagnosed or undiagnosed type 2 diabetes, collectively referred to as pregestational diabetes. GDM affects up to 14% of pregnant women, depending on the population.4 In North America, the prevalence of GDM is higher in Asians, African-Americans, Native North Americans from Canada, and Hispanics than in non-Hispanic whites.5
