Abstract

While failure to attain desired levels of weight loss is a common disappointment for many dieters, what to many is even more discouraging is the difficulty of maintaining those subpar weight losses. The record shows that a majority of dieters who succeed in losing weight eventually regain it, typically regaining one third to two thirds of lost weight within a year and almost all of it within 5 years.108,109,110 So, it is not surprising that the growing consensus in the field is that the real challenge in obesity treatment is not losing the weight, but keeping it off.111
