Social Deprivation

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: International and Cultural Psychology Series ((ICUP))

Abstract

More than half the global population is extremely poor. Many live in substandard housing, can’t read, earn barely enough to feed themselves and their families, and have few opportunities to better their circumstances. Their struggle to survive is often compounded by feelings of helplessness, terror, and despair. Although most of these people are remarkably resilient, exposure to persistent Stressors and traumas wears down the spirit and depletes even the hardiest person’s resources.
