Abstract

James Carpenter Design Associates was asked to develop concept ideas to enclose the wedge-shaped atrium of the Tower Place Development in London, designed by Foster and Partners. Following on JCDA’s work at the German Foreign Ministry in Berlin, JCDA suggested a cable-net wall which was to be suspended from the atrium roof, floating 5 m (16 foot) off the floor. Tensioned horizontal cables would be tied into the flanking buildings’ floor plates, thereby supporting the glass. To reduce the overall horizontal cable length and its deflection, a field of intermittent struts was placed evenly at 10 m (32 foot) to carry the load back to the columns supporting the roof.
