Chronic Otomastoiditis without Cholesteatoma

Abstract

Chronic otomastoiditis usually causes fixation or damage to the middle ear ossicles and tympanic membrane, resulting in conductive hearing loss. In such cases computed tomography is regarded to be the examination of choice, and imaging studies are performed to evaluate the reasons of conductive hearing loss—either ossicular chain fixation or erosion. Thin slice, high-resolution CT permits diagnosis of the various stages of chronic otomastoiditis and associated complications. However, this method is unable to differentiate between different types of effusions in tympanic cavity; also evaluation of cholesteatoma is challenging in many cases.
