Abstract.

We investigate possible nuclear chains for carbon production during the main-sequence phase of low-mass, initially metal-free stars with the help of an extended nuclear network. Though unconventional chains dominate during the early phases, only the familiar triple-\(\alpha\) process is effective enough to produce carbon at a mass fraction level of 10-10, which is then triggering operation of the CNO-cycle.
