Abstract

The human pathogenHistoplasma capsulatumis a major endemic dimorphic fungi, existing in a mycelial form in the environment and as a yeast during infection. Exposure toH. capsulatumproduces a range of host responses, from asymptomatic infection to rapidly fatal disease. This chapter will review the current knowledge of the microbial characteristics, pathogenesis, epidemiology, clinical manifestations, current diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, and host immunity toH. capsulatum. In particular, the host response is determined by the outcome of the complex interactions between innate immunity, adaptive immunity andH. capsulatumvirulence factors
