Abstract
Dented contacts have been studied in an EHL ball on disk device under pure sliding conditions. Contact temperature therefore lubricant rheological parameters and sliding speed influences have been investigated. Dents whose diameter was around one fifth of the Hertzian contact diameter have been maintained in the centre of the contact. According to the operating conditions, the measured pressure distributions show very different shapes, from a nearly hydrodynamic profile to almost two discontinuous peaks. The influence of the dent shoulders is also visible, underling the strong elastohydrodynamic effects generated by the contact micro geometry. The experimental findings are then compared to analytical results obtained under dry conditions. Some possible consequences for fatigue life prediction are proposed thanks to a measured 3-dimensional pressure map.
