Abstract
In the previous chapter, we saw that interactions between organisms lead to complexity in ecosystems. Interactions between organisms and their environment also contribute. Soil formation, for instance, involves a combination of organic and inorganic processes. Rainforests not only depend on local climate, but also they modify it. Flow of water across a landscape affects the suitability of sites, determining where plants can grow.
