From the opening statement prepared for the fiftieth Dies Natalis of the Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, 9 October 2002, following the completion of the conference Globalisation, Poverty and Conflict, The occasion was sadly overshadowed by the death of HIs Royal Highmess Prince Class of the Netherlands on 6 October. Prince Claus had been an ISS Honorary Fellow since 1988. The Dies Natalis celebration started with an In Memoriam which commemorated the Prince’s contribution to thinking on development and development policy.
