Abstract
Chapter 3 highlights the role that the healthcare context plays in determining the form that communication takes. In order to set the stage, an overview of the U.S. healthcare system is provided, and the changing nature of both the healthcare system and the healthcare consumer is described. Current trends in healthcare that are expected to impact the health communication process are discussed.
