Guided Reading

  • There is a wealth of material on evaluation and you may care to check your library’s holdings for recent books and guides. A good overview of evaluation, the issues, methods, and resources is J. Centra, Reflective Faculty Evaluation, Jossey-Bass, San Franciso, 1993. This book also explores evaluating research and service and so complements Scholarship Assessed which is noted below.

  • On portfolios, the most straightforward advice is contained in the original Canadian work on this subject by B. Shore et al., The Teaching Dossier, Guide to its Preparation and Use, Canadian Association of University Teachers, 1991. Another useful introduction to portfolios, which also considers their relationship to scholarship, is The Teaching Portfolio: Capturing the Scholarship of Teaching by R. Edgerton, P. Hutchings and K. Quinlan, American Association for Higher Education, Washington, D.C., 1991.

  • If you are concerned to evaluate materials and educational technologies we suggest M. Tessmer, Planning and Conducting Formative Evaluations, Kogan Page, London, 1993. This is an interesting mixture of useful guidance on planning evaluations, evaluating materials, and the whole notion of formative evaluation. Hartley’s book is also helpful on evaluating materials; Designing Instructional Text, Kogan Page, London, 1994.
