MPTRAM is an abstract machine for parallel rewriting that is intended to be reasonably implemented on massively parallel computers. MPTRAM has been implemented on Cray T3E carrying 128 PEs with MPI. It rewrites terms efficiently in parallel (about 65 times faster than TRAM) if message traffic is little. But we have to reduce the overhead of message passing somehow, e.g. by using the shared globally addressable memory subsystem of Cray T3E, so that MPTRAM can be used to implement algebraic specification languages.
