Abstract

In contrast to other Australian States, Tasmania has a large number of inland lakes and lagoons (Fig. 3.1); on the Central Plateau alone there are several thousand, ranging in size from < 1 ha up to the 150 km2 of Great Lake (1)*. Again in contrast to mainland States, most of these lakes contain water of high purity, though dark humic waters are found in the southwest and saline or hypersaline lagoons occur in the Midlands.
