The geographical area covered in this volume (Fig. 1) lies on the southwestern margin of the mostly arid and ancient Great Plateau of Precambrian crystalline rocks that makes up much of the western third of the continent. The western edge is a clearly defined escarpment, rising a few hundred metres above the sandy coastal plain, which runs almost parallel to the coast from just north of Perth to the south-western corner of Western Australia. The escarpment and the broadly undulating upland form the Darling Range.
