Abstract

It is a widespread observation that polar marine invertebrates and fish grow slowly. Although a few species have been reported as growing rapidly (for example the sponge Mycale acerata at McMurdo Sound: Dayton et al. 1974), it is generally true that most polar marine invertebrates and fish grow more slowly than related species from wanner water (reviewed in Clarke 1983, 1988).
