Zusammenfassung
Bei der Untersuchung von Stoffwechselproblemen gibt es Fälle, wo die Anwendung von radioaktiven Isotopen als Indicatoren nicht zum Ziele führt, sei es daß die Wirkung der Strahlen vermieden werden soll, oder daß es von dem betreffenden Element kein geeignetes radioaktives Isotop gibt. Letzteres ist der Fall gerade bei den Elementen Wasserstoff, Stickstoff und Sauerstoff, die im Stoffwechsel eine große Rolle spielen. Auch beim Kohlenstoff stieß man lange Zeit auf Schwierigkeiten, bis das radioaktive Isotop C14 in größeren Mengen hergestellt werden konnte. Glücklicherweise kommen von diesen vier Elementen in der Natur seltene stabile Isotope vor, die angereichert und als Indicatoren verwendet werden können. Aus folgender Tabelle ist die natürliche Zusammensetzung dieser vier Elemente zu ersehen.
