Abstract

As an important mediator of nutrients, water, and carbon cycling in forest ecosystem s, mycorrhizal structure and function are closely related to the stress situation in the environment. Due to their importance in below-ground processes, mycorrhizal fungi are suitable bioindicators of stress as well as reveal the functioning of the hidden-half of the forest ecosystem. Human-induced stress factors and their impacts on mycorrhiza are presented on the basis of a series of studies in the past two decades in Slovenia.
