Summary
Equations are presented that describe two superposed shallow layers of inviscid fluid flowing over topography in a rotating frame, with a complete treatment of the Coriolis force. Motivated by applications to the Earth)s equatorial oceans, these equations offer a physically reasonable alternative to the empirical friction currently used to regularise existing shallow water models at the equator.
