Abstract

This paper seeks to trace the evolution of the processes of vertebrate communication and echolocation. To do this we have drawn information from the evolution of receptors, from animal communication and we refer to the origins of the supporting cognitive systems. The second paper reviews the cognitive systems underlying communication. The two papers are meant to be considered together.
