Oxidative Stress of Vertebrates and Invertebrates

  • Chapter

Abstract

Animals are at the mercy of green plants. Plants are releasing O2 at rates faster than can be consumed by animal respiration. Approximately 1.3 billion years ago, the percentage of atmospheric O2 was 1% of its current level of 22% (Hendry, 1992; Harman 1992). Living in a world of increased O2 is costly—almost any chemical process that requires O2 may produce injurious reactive oxygen species (ROS). Protection from ROS is of fundamental biological importance regardless of whether an animal’s life span is measured in days or decades.

“Thanks to green plants, oxidation is the fate that awaits us all.” George Hendry (1992)
