Abstract
A longstanding view of simple cells in primary visual cortex is that their response is a weighted sum of the stimulus intensities over local space and recent time. This linear model is very successful at explaining the cells’ selectivity for the position, orientation, spatial frequency and direction of motion of drifting grating stimuli [19, 1, 13, 17].
