Abstract

Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has the potential to determine almost all the elements in the periodic table at the part-per-million level in solid samples with a spatial resolution of around 20 μm. To gain an insight into this powerful technique it is necessary to understand the principles of operation of the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer and the operation of lasers. In this chapter, a detailed explanation of the ICP-MS instrument and the development of a laser system will be followed by a review of the history and current applications of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS).
