Abstract

As we have seen, musicians are creative in putting a band together and in songwriting; however, to be successful, they must create a sound that is distinctive. Musical styles are differentiated on the basis of elements of sound such as rhythm, melody, harmony, and tone. Though musicians must have their own style, most compose within a particular genre of musical style such as jazz, country and western, rock, hip-hop, and so on. We can also compare the musical styles in different eras. The Tin Pan Alley songs, mostly written for Broadway, were quite different from the rock and roll songs of the 1950s which were simpler in both musical structure and lyrics. Fewer humans and a greater reliance on electrical amplification or electronic reproduction of sound characterized the Rock and Roll Era and rap music continued this trend.
