Abstract
Patients with neurological disease usually require intensive care for three main reasons. These are coma, muscle paralysis and respiratory failure. Guillain-Barré syndrome and myasthenia gravis are examples of neurological diseases which can give rise to acute respiratory failure. They are both autoimmune diseases and reflect the changing face of neurology, neurological prognosis and treatment in the light of the advances in molecular biology.
