Abstract
Magnaporthe grisea (Herbert) Barr, a fungal pathogen causing Blast disease on rice and other Poaceae, is present in all rice growing areas. Only the asexual form, Pyricularia grisea, of this haploid Ascomycete has been identified in the field. In vitro, sexual reproduction can be realized between isolates of opposite mating types (Matl.1/Mat1.2), provided that one isolate is female fertile. Only a few female fertile isolates have been identified among worldwide collections of thousands of isolates [4].
