Zusammenfassung
In der wissenschaftlichen Literatur zum Innovationsmanagement – wie in der betrieblichen Praxis der Neuproduktentwicklung – wird der Einsatz von „innovativen Analogien“ als ein vielversprechender Ansatz gesehen, denn hierdurch kann bereits bestehendes Wissen zur Lösung von Problemstellungen, die in anderen Kontexten situiert sind, eingesetzt werden. Innovative Analogien können somit maßgeblich zur Reduzierung von Technologie- und Marktrisiken beitragen. Insbesondere die Senkung der Entwicklungskosten sowie -risiken lässt den Einsatz von innovativen Analogien auch bei der Entwicklung von sog. „frugalen“, kostengünstigen und effizienzorientierten, Innovationen, als attraktiv erscheinen. Dieser Zusammenhang ist bisher in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur nicht explizit aufgegriffen worden. In dem vorliegenden Beitrag untersuchen wir einige operationale Aspekte frugaler Produktentwicklung anhand ausgewählter Fallstudien und können feststellen, dass gerade frugale Innovationen besonders häufig auf innovative Produktanalogien zurückgreifen.

Auch „ChotuKool“, ein batteriegetriebener Kühlschrank arbeitet mit thermoelektrischer Kühlung und ist mit einem Chip und Computer-Ventilator ausgestattet. Diese Technologien sind bis dahin nie in Kühlschränken eingesetzt worden (Chakravarthy und Coughlan 2011).

Vollständigkeitshalber sei hier auch auf erklärende Analogien verwiesen. Laut Kalogerakis (2010, S. 25) können „[m]it Hilfe von erklärenden Analogien [.] Erkenntnisse über neue Situationen oder Probleme gewonnen werden, indem diese mit bekannten Sachverhalten verglichen werden, die eine strukturelle Ähnlichkeit aufweisen“. Diese Analogien werden beispielsweise in der Konsumentenforschung eingesetzt. Werbemaßnahmen bringen sehr neue Produkte mit den bekannten in Verbindung, so dass Konsumenten ihre Eigenschaften und Gebrauch besser einschätzen können (Kalogerakis 2010).

In der englischsprachigen Literatur gibt es für an die Natur angelehnte Analogien auch den Begriff „Biomimicry“ (Benyus 2002).

Eine aktuelle Studie des Roten Kreuz besagt, in den europäischen Ländern gäbe es 43 Mio. Menschen, die nicht genug zum Essen haben; insgesamt 120 Mio. Bürger seien von der Armut bedroht (IFRC 2013)

Zum Beispiel durch Verkauf von frugalen Wasserfiltern in ländlichen Regionen ohne fließendes Wasser und Stromanschluss, oder Mobiltelefone in Gegenden ohne Festnetzanschluss, wovon sowohl arme als auch reiche Menschen in der jeweiligen Region betroffen wären.

Laut einer im Handelsblatt zitierten Untersuchung der Stiftung Warentest lassen manche Hersteller mit einigen „Tricks“ ihren Umsatz ankurbeln: „Dazu gehören hohe Reparaturkosten, fest eingebaute Akkus, fehlende Ersatzteile, Drucker, die fälschlich leere Patronen anzeigen oder Produkte, die sich nicht reparieren lassen.“ (Handelsblatt 2013).

Die „sparsame“ Lebenseinstellung muss nicht zwingend dem finanziellen Geiz geschuldet sein, sondern sie kann durchaus auch in „hehreren“ Motiven (z. B. Umweltbedenken) begründet liegen.
