Das Arbeitsgedächtnis (AG) — eine der kürzesten und am wenigsten selektiven Gedächtnisformen — wurde im Vergleich zum Lang- und Kurzzeitgedächtnis vergleichsweise spät konzeptualisiert (Baddeley 1986, 2003). Es nimmt im Bereich der bisher innerhalb der kognitiven Psychologie postulierten Gedächtnismodalitäten insofern eine Sonderstellung ein, als es als grundlegende Bedingung fast aller höheren kognitiven Leistungen des Menschen angesehen wird. Für eine Vielzahl kognitiver Prozesse, etwa grundlegende mathematische Operationen bis hin zu sprachlichen und komplexeren visuell-räcmlichen Leistungen, gilt es als eine der wesentlichen kognitiven Voraussetzungen. Allgemein wird das AG an der Schnittstelle zwischen Wahrnehmung und Aufmerksamkeit, Langzeitgedächtnis, kognitiver Kontrolle und Handlungsplanung angesiedelt.
