Quality assessment of structural steels

Abstract

A quantitative method of assessing the quality of steel and alloys has been developed, on the basis of the agreement of the plasticity and mechanical stability K ms with the optimal values at specified strength σ0.2. A new characteristic is introduced: the quality index. The critical ductile-brittle transition temperature is found to increase with decrease in the metal’s quality index. Steels and alloys of different strength may be classified in terms of the corresponding quality group, the quality levels within these groups, and the optimality of their mechanical stability.
