Abstract

The common periwinkle,Littorina littorea, is reported from Ocean City, Maryland, and its southern spread is reviewed. A southward flowing longshore current has assisted its southward spread. The southern limit of this species is correlated with water mean isothern of 21°C in the warmest month on both sides of the Atlantic. This limit may be expected to fluctuate with yearly variations in coastal water temperatures.
