Abstract
Mechanisms of involvement of contextual memory in the retrieval of food aversion conditioning were studied in the snail Helix lucorum. The reaction for food aversion conditioning was found to be observed only in the conditioning context and never in the neutral context. The reminding procedure (presentation of conditioning food stimuli) performed after the injection of cycloheximide, an inhibitor of protein synthesis, and the placement of snails in the conditioning context, produced long-term amnesia. The injection of cycloheximide in the conditioning context without the subsequent reminding procedure did not result in the long-term amnesia. Food aversion conditioning also produced contextual conditioning, which was characterized by an increase in the latency of “differential” food consumption. The results indicate differences between the mechanisms of contextual memory involved in the storage and retrieval of food aversion conditioning in snails.
