Lithofacies features of boehmite-bearing limestones of the supraore sequence in the north Ural bauxite mine

Abstract

Scrutinization of the supraore Emsian (Lower Devonian) limestone section in the Novokal’insk Pit of the North Ural Bauxite Mine revealed that the limestones were deposited in a shallow coastal-marine setting, and they almost universally contain the cryptocrystalline boehmite. Electron microscopic study demonstrated that the cryptocrystalline boehmite aggregates in the supraore limestone sequence are mainly sandwiched between limestone clasts and organogenic detritus. Hence, boehmite entered carbonate rocks during marine sedimentogenesis, probably, as colloidal particles that represent a major form of Al migration.
