Abstract
Odontoglossum ringspot virus (ORSY) is the most prevalent and economically important virus of orchids in the world. However, little is known of the incidence of this virus in orchid collections in India. We describe development of a slot-blot hybridisation assay for ORSV. With this test, 42 of 100 orchid samples from Sikkim in north-eastern India tested positive for the virus. This assay is useful for the screening and certification of virus-free orchid material (for distribution to commercial growers) due to its high sensitivity, reliability and efficacy.
