Abstract
In February 2002, the American Academy of Pediatrics released a Policy Statement entitled Coparent or Second-Parent Adoption by Same-Sex Parents encouraging members to “Advocate for initiatives that establish permanency through coparent or second-parent adoption for children of same-sex partners.” The Policy Statement is based upon the best available science and has resulted in a wide-ranging debate on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues both inside and outside the Academy. Overall, the Policy Statement is likely to have a positive effect on the movement for equal rights for LGBT persons through both legislation and judicial rulings.
