Abstract
In this paper we review recent microscopic studies ofsupercurrent flow in Josephson junctions. In particular, wediscuss a method that allows direct measurements of thecontribution given to the supercurrent by electrons whichoccupy quantum states at different energies. Relevanttheoretical concepts are explained, with a particular emphasison the relation between Andreev bound states and supercurrent. The experimental system developed to perform these studies, anew kind of four terminal Josephson junctions, is described indetail. Measurements and theoretical predictions are comparedand a very good qualitative agreement is found. In conclusion, possible future directions of research in this area arementioned.

These undesired heating effects are well known in metals. See for instance F.C. Wellstood, C. Urbina, and J. Clarke, Phys. Rev. B 49, 5942 (1994); see also the discussion in M.Henny et at., Phys. Rev. B 59, 2871 (1999).
The original prediction of this effect was made by A. F. Volkov (Phys. Rev. Lett. 14, 4730 (1995)) for SINIS junctions (with “1” insulating layer at the interface between Nand S, acting as a tunnel barrier). See also, A. F. Volkov and H. Takayanagi, Phys. Rev. B 56, 11184 (1997) for a more general treatment. For the experiments discussed here, with highly transmissive NjS interface, see Ref.10.
