Ngo Viet Trung at a conference

There are two issues (the current being the first one) of this volume dedicated to Ngo Viet Trung on the occasion of his 60th anniversary.

Ngo Viet Trung was born in 1953. He studied mathematics at Martin-Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in Germany. There he received his PhD under Wolfgang Vogel in 1978, followed by his habilitation in 1983. Since 1978, he has been a researcher at the Institute of Mathematics of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. He was promoted to an associate professor in 1983 and to a full professor in 1991. Ngo Viet Trung has published nearly 100 research papers and 3 mathematical textbooks. His research covers a broad variety of problems in Commutative Algebra and its interaction to Algebraic Geometry and Combinatorics.

Ngo Viet Trung has contributed a lot to the development of mathematics in Vietnam. He introduced Commutative Algebra to Vietnam and was editor in chief of Acta Mathematica Vietnamica from 1991 to 2007. At the Institute of Mathematics, he was the founder of the Department of Algebra, served as chair of the Scientific Committee from years 2001 to 2007 and as director of the institute from 2007 to 2013. In recognition to his scientific achievements and his contribution to the development of sciences in developing countries, he was elected as a member of the World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of science in developing countries (TWAS) in 2000.

We are very delighted that there are so many mathematicians who would like to contribute papers dedicated to the 60th anniversary of Ngo Viet Trung. That has resulted in the two special issues of this volume which were peer reviewed and edited in cooperation with David Eisenbud, Shiro Goto, Juergen Herzog, and Le Tuan Hoa. We would like express our sincere thanks to them and to the authors who submitted papers to these issues.
