Medical complications after lung transplantation

Abstract

In recent years, the field of lung transplantation has seen incremental advances in surgical technique and medical management, resulting in improved graft survival and an overall increase in the number of lung transplants performed worldwide. Lung transplantation is now performed in older patients with greater comorbidities and more pulmonary dysfunction prior to transplant than in past eras. Consequently, we have greater knowledge of the significant medical complications that occur after lung transplant including cardiovascular disease, renal insufficiency, gastroesophageal reflux, blood dyscrasias, neurologic disease, and malignancies. This article focuses on noninfectious, nonpulmonary medical complications seen postoperatively and discusses their impact on overall morbidity and mortality after lung transplantation.
