Samenvatting

‘Alles beter dan een katheter’ wordt weleens gezegd. Men doelt dan op de complicaties van een chronische verblijfskatheter en het feit dat deze leidt tot een kortere levensverwachting. De indicaties bestaan slechts uit blaasretentie en een onbehandelbaar blaasresidu van meer dan 200 ml. Incontinentie of decubitus zijn geen indicaties voor een katheter. Intermitterende katheterisatie moet altijd eerst nagestreefd worden.

In dit artikel worden de complicaties van een blaaskatheter besproken. De belangrijkste zijn: verstopping, lekkage, hematurie en urineweginfecties. Blaasspoelen dient alleen bij hematurie te worden gedaan en niet bij verstopping. Bij verstopping kan de katheter worden gespoeld en is een kleine hoeveelheid van 10 cc fysiologisch zout al voldoende. Profylactisch antibioticagebruik bij een verblijfskatheter is obsoleet. Bij het verwijderen van een blaaskatheter zijn blaastraining en profylactisch antibioticagebruik verlaten.
