Abstract
Intercultural communication competence is an important success factor of German companies in China. Research on intercultural communication, however, is mainly influenced by Western paradigms and methodologies which may not be transferred to the Chinese context as they do not adequately reflect important characteristics of the Chinese culture. Based on qualitative interviews with 20 Chinese and 25 German expatriates important elements of the Chinese communication style are explored. Afterwards, challenges of Sino-German business communication are analyzed and implications for its improvement are derived. In the final section, potential avenues for future research are presented.

„A high context communication or message is one in which more of the information is either in the physical context or internalized in the person, while very little is in the coded, explicit part of the message. A low-context communication is just the opposite; i.e. the mass of information is vested in the explicit code.“ (Hall 1976, S. 79).
