Abstract

Chocolate, alcohol and coffee are widely consumed products and are often used on a daily basis. Formerly associated with negative health effects, more recent studies favor a beneficial effect of chocolate, alcohol and coffee with respect to cardiovascular diseases. This could be explained in part by the high content of polyphenols in cocoa and red wine that exert antioxidant properties. Although excessive alcohol consumption is unquestionably harmful, recent data suggested beneficial effects on cardiovascular diseases. Coffee, which is the most consumed beverage in Germany, contains polyphenols and also many other ingredients, such as caffeine. Caffeine as well as alcohol have been the subject of several trials in the past decade. This review summarizes the available data of the relationship between chocolate, alcohol and coffee consumption and cardiovascular diseases.
