Summary

Involvement in Sport Activity and Young Peoples’ Development of Concepts of the Self

Whilst there have been some quite sophisticated investigations into young peoples’ interest in sport and their activity in various settings of sport culture, investigations into the effects on socialization of sporting activity have been thin on the ground. To investigate the often-proclaimed effect of sporting activity more precisely, this paper presents empirical results from two long-term studies both of 200 pupils in the course of their progression from class 8 to 10. On the basis of a multi-dimensional model of concepts of the self, the possible influence of either young peoples’ active involvement in competitive or less serious sporting activity are compared with the influence of negligible involvement. Self-concepts of social relationships to peers of the same or different gender and evaluations of self-value show only modest effects of sporting activity. Those who get most out of sport in these terms are young women, who are actively involved in sport.
