Abstract

The ultrastructural characteristics of the ascus apical apparatus of Encoelia furfuracea are described by means of transmission electron microscopy. The structure of its ascus apex is considerably different from that of E. tiliacea and E. fimbriata, and from other members of Helotiales in which these structures have been studied. Remarkable interspecific differences in the ascus apical apparatus provide additional data indicating heterogeneity of the genus.

Acknowledgments

I am indebted to the late Ain Raitviir (1938–2006, Tartu, Estonia) who initiated this study. I thank the staff of the Laboratory of Developmental Biology, University of Tartu, for providing the technical assistance. The staff of the Unit of Electron Microscopy in Helsinki Biocenter (University of Helsinki, Institute of Biotechnology) helped in using the transmission electron microscope at their lab. Hans Otto Baral, Aleksandr Ordynets and Curator of M are acknowledged for sending specimens. Gerard J. M. Verkley and Kadri Põldmaa are acknowledged for their valuable comments to the manuscript. The study was financially supported by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (Centre of Excellence FIBIR) and by scholarship of Centre for International Mobility from the funds of Baltia 75 to K.
