On July 20–22, 2008, the World Summit of Antivirals 2008, organized by the Chinese BIT Life Sciences, was held in Kunming, China. A total of nearly 300 participants from more than 30 countries and regions attended this conference. The conference, themed “Combating Severe Viral Infections,” consisted of 19 sessions under four tracks: (1) Public Health and Basic Sciences for Emerging and Major Infectious Diseases; (2) Major Antiviral Drug Discovery and Development; (3) Sensitive and Accurate Diagnostic Tests; (4) Commemorate Symposium of HIV/AIDS. Scientists and industrial professionals presented their achievements on antiviral research and development. In Keynote and Plenary Lectures, Dr. Robert C. Gallo, Director of the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, addressed HIV/AIDS research perspectives from the past and prospects for the future.
