This issue features an Invited Feature Article by Carla Wegscheidl and co-authors about the availability of data in Australia to quantify the ecosystem services provided by saltmarshes. Such data are needed to inform the decision makers who deal with coastal development, protection and repair. The authors demonstrate a lack of quantitative information in Australia, and probably in most countries, needed to substantiate and communicate the value of saltmarshes in different locations, scales and contexts. To address this knowledge gap, this Invited Feature Article proposes four principles for research funding organisations and researchers to consider when prioritising and undertaking research on key ecological functions of saltmarshes, and coastal seascapes more broadly.
