This issue features an Invited Feature Article by T. Albers and K. Schmitt who describe the coastal protection in the Lower Mekong Delta of Vietnam. Coastal areas are threatened by rising sea levels and the increased intensity and frequency of storms. The substrate is too muddy and soft to support the weight of large dykes. Instead a successful strategy of coastal protection was adopted to work with nature by using different elements in series including mangroves, small dykes, and a bamboo fence to decrease wave energy and erosion and stimulate sedimentation.
