Personal Wellbeing of Participants of Social Purpose Enterprises: The Influence of Social Support

Abstract

This paper examines the effects of practical and emotional social support to changes in personal and vocational wellbeing of employees and training participants of social purpose enterprises. This study finds that among participants with lower baseline optimism and self-esteem, those who found the practical social support from their organization to be more relevant to their work outcomes had significantly higher optimism and self-esteem at the time of the survey, compared to other low baseline participants who had assigned less importance to their work-centred practical support. Social support did not influence those with high baseline scores in optimism and self-esteem, or changes to self-efficacy and vocational identity. Implications on support intervention within social purpose enterprises and for the broader field of social enterprise research are discussed.

Résumé

Cet article étudie les effets du soutien social, pratique et émotionnel, dans le changement du bien-être personnel et professionnel des employés et des participants aux formations des entreprises à vocation sociale. Cette étude conclut que parmi les participants dotés d’un optimisme et d’une estime de soi au départ inférieurs, ceux qui avaient trouvé le soutien social pratique de leur organisation le plus adapté pour leurs résultats en matière de travail avaient un optimisme et une estime de soi nettement plus élevés au moment de l’enquête que les autres participants au niveau inférieur qui avaient donné moins d’importance à leur soutien pratique axé sur le travail. Le soutien social n’influençait pas ceux aux points initiaux élevés en termes d’optimisme et d’estime de soi ou de modification de l’auto-efficacité et de l’identité professionnelle. Les conséquences pour le soutien au sein des entreprises à vocation sociale et pour le domaine plus large des recherches sur l’entreprise sociale sont examinées.

Zusammenfassung

Dieser Beitrag untersucht, wie sich die praktische und emotionale soziale Unterstützung auf Änderungen des persönlichen und beruflichen Wohlbefindens von Mitarbeitern und Schulungsteilnehmern in Unternehmen mit einem sozialen Zweck auswirkt. Die Studie zeigt, dass die Teilnehmer, die ausgehend von der Baseline weniger optimistisch waren und ein geringeres Selbstwertgefühl hatten und die praktische soziale Unterstützung seitens ihrer Organisation als relevanter für ihre Arbeitsleistung empfanden, zum Zeitpunkt der Befragung weitaus optimistischer waren und ein höheres Selbstwertgefühl hatten als andere Teilnehmer, die sich an der unteren Baseline befanden und der arbeitszentrierten praktischen Unterstützung weniger Bedeutung beimaßen. Die soziale Unterstützung hatte keinen Einfluss auf Personen mit einem hohen Baseline-Score bezüglich Optimismus und Selbstwertgefühl und wirkte sich nicht auf Änderungen in der Selbstwirksamkeit und beruflichen Identität aus. Implikationen zur Unterstützungsintervention innerhalb von Unternehmen, die einen sozialen Zweck verfolgen, sowie für die weitere Forschung zu sozialen Unternehmen werden diskutiert.

Resumen

El presente documento examina los efectos del apoyo social práctico y emocional a los cambios en el bienestar personal y vocacional de los empleados y los participantes de formación de empresas con fines sociales. El presente estudio muestra que entre los participantes con un optimismo y una autoestima inferior al punto de referencia, aquellos que encontraron que el apoyo social práctico de su organización era más relevante para los resultados de su trabajo tenían un optimismo y una autoestima significativamente mayor en el momento de la encuesta, en comparación a otros participantes con punto de referencia bajo que habían asignado menos importancia a su apoyo práctico centrado en el trabajo. El apoyo social no influyó en aquellos con puntuaciones altas con respecto al punto de referencia en optimismo y autoestima, o con cambios en su eficiencia personal e identidad vocacional. Se tratan las implicaciones sobre la intervención del apoyo dentro de las empresas con fines sociales y para el campo más amplio de investigación de la empresa social.

本文考察了 社会实际支持和情感支持对以社会利益为宗旨的企业的员工以及参训人员的个人状况和职业状况的影响,研究发现, 在基线较低的乐观和自尊的参与者中,和其他基线低的、比较不重视以工作为中心的实际支持的参与者相比,那些认为来自机构的实际社会支持和工作成果更具相关性的人,在调查的时间具有更高的乐观和自尊,社会支持不影响那些在乐观和自尊方面基准分数高的人,或改变他们的自我效能和职业认同。 对于以社会利益为宗旨的企业内部的支持干预以及更广泛的社会企业研究领域,文章还讨论了研究结果对这些支持以及领域的意义。

يفحص هذا البحث آثار الدعم الإجتماعي العملي والعاطفي للتغيرات في الرفاهية الشخصية والمهنية للعاملين والمشاركين في الدورات التدريبية للمؤسسات التي تهدف إلى النواحي الإجتماعية. وجدت هذه الدراسة أن من بين المشاركين الذين لديهم قليل من التفاؤل الأساسي وإحترام الذات، الذين وجدوا الدعم الإجتماعي العملي من المنظمة يكونوا أكثر إهتماما”بنتائج عملهم أو لديهم الكثير من التفاؤل والثقة بالنفس في وقت إجراء إستطلاع الرأي، مقارنة مع المشاركين الآخرين الذين كلفوا بأعمال أقل أهمية و دعم أقل من الناحية العملية. الدعم الإجتماعي لم يؤثر على الذين لديهم درجة عالية من التفاؤل والثقة بالنفس، أو يؤثر على الكفاءة الذاتية والهوية المهنية. يناقش البحث الآثار المترتبة على تدخل الدعم داخل المؤسسات للغرض الإجتماعي والمجال الأوسع لبحوث مشاريع الريادة الإجتماعية.
