About the Intermolecular Potential in Solid Hydrogen

Abstract

New calculations of both the equation of state and the frequency of the Raman-active optical phonon in phases I and II of solid hydrogen at pressures larger than about 20 GPa show that no semiempirical potential so far suggested, even containing three-body components, is able to reproduce the experimental findings. The result poses the question of whether, in the solid phases I and II, an expansion of the hydrogen intermolecular potential in an increasing number of many-body contributions is really possible.
