Abstract
This is the republished English edition of a paper by E. Lifshitz, first published in 1946, in which the author investigates the gravitational stability of the non–stationary isotropic models of the universe. The paper has been selected by the Editors of General Relativity and Gravitation for re-publication in the Golden Oldies series of the journal. This republication is accompanied by an editorial note written by George F. R. Ellis, and by a brief biography of Evgenii Mikhailovich Lifshitz, written by Andrzej Krasiński.

Additional information
Original paper: The original paper was published simultaneously in Russian and English. The Russian edition appeared as Zh. Eksp. Teor. Fiz. 16, 587–602 and the English edition as J. Phys. (USSR) 10, 116–129 (1946), both published by the USSR Academy of Sciences. Here we republish the English text without change except for setting it in one column rather than two. In 1946 the USSR did not subscribe to international copyright conventions. Nevertheless we are grateful to the present editors of Zh. Eksp. Teor. Fiz. (Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics) for indicating that they are content with the inclusion of this paper in the Golden Oldies series. We also thank the heirs of E. Lifshitz for agreeing to this republication.
The paper has also been republished as item 15 in Pitaevskii, L. P. (ed.): Perspectives in Theoretical Physics: The collected papers of E. M. Lifshitz, with translations from Russian by J. B. Sykes and D. ter Haar, pp. 219–240. Pergamon Press, Oxford (1992).
