Abstract
Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is an established therapeutic measure for various chronic pulmonary diseases. This therapeutic approach is necessary, evidence-based and part of national and international guidelines and recommendations. The best studied disease is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) but other indications, such as bronchial asthma or pulmonary fibrosis have gained considerable attention due to good studies. The established legal requirements, the high standard of components used during PR as well as the quality management (QM) standard are exemplary for both the outpatient and inpatient form of PR in Germany and Austria. Nevertheless, the use of PR has to be intensified with respect to the early use in the intensive care unit (ICU) and the follow-up. Despite the proven medical, social and economic benefits PR is still used too late and too rarely during treatment of chronic pulmonary diseases.
