This volume contains a blend of papers from the field of Numerics and Scientific Computing. The papers were presented at the conference “Numerics and Scientific Computing” which took place in Bruchsal Palace from October, 22 to 24, 2013. The papers cover a range from numerical analysis of hp methods to several H matrix related topics.

Like the conference, the current issue is dedicated to the birthday of two leading colleagues from the area, Dietrich Braess (75) and Wolfgang Hackbusch (65). Both founded new research fields in the area. Wolfgang Hackbusch serves on the editorial board of Computing and Visualization in Science. The contributions to the conference and the current issue show that their work is prospering in the community and serves as a basis for a new generation of researchers.

Special thanks are due to Eva-Maria Vachek, who carefully compiled the contributions to this volume.
